Path to Indie Publication Series is a companion series to Marshall Ryan Maresca’s Path to Publication. I have been avidly reading Marshall’s posts since I discovered his blog. There is seriously nothing cooler as an author than seeing a new book with your name on it released to the world. Even better if it’s a printed copy. Just behind that is seeing a translation of your novel into another language.

My first experience was actually having a fan translate the first four chapters of ALL IS SILENCE into Turkish. “Hello! I checked your story “All Is Silence” and literally I feel in love with it! I am a big fan of science- fiction and mystery books! With your permission, I’d love to translate your story into Turkish on Wattpad, all credits to you. You will be the author and I’ll be the translator. Copyrights will be yours, you know. Would you consider that?”

Next, I signed up for FibeRead, a Chinese translation site. I suspect my translation will never be complete. It started with a four translator team and then three and then two. Seems to be stuck. It’s available at a few other Chinese-based retailers, and appeared on Amazon.com in August 11th, 2020. 365 days after my fictional Bat-flu pandemic, “The Quieting,” as Lizzie calls it was discovered.

Then I found BabelCube. Their translation deal is that for 5 years, the rights holder receives 30%, the translator receives 50%, and Babelcube retains 20%. I chose translators for Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. The first three were finished in a reasonable amount of time. The Portuguese translator kept missing deadlines and finally pulled out. The Spanish and French ones
